Quod verum est meum est

Quod verum est meum est.

Kas yra tiesa, tas mano.

Any truth, I maintain, is my own property.

Nisi ad regulam prava non corriges

Opus est, inquam, aliquo ad quem mores nostri se ipsi exigant: nisi ad regulam prava non corriges.

Kartoju, mums reikia žmogaus, kurio pavyzdžiu klostytųsi mūsų būdas, nes tik liniuotė ištiesina kreivas linijas.

For we must indeed have someone according to whom we may regulate our characters; you can never straighten that which is crooked unless you use a ruler.

Sic loquere cum deo tamquam homines audiant

Sic vive cum hominibus tamquam deus videat, sic loquere cum deo tamquam homines audiant.

Gyvenk su žmonėmis taip, tarsi dievas tave matytų, kalbėkis su dievu taip, tarsi žmonės tave girdėtų.

Live among men as if God beheld you; speak with God as if men were listening.

Jei nori būti mylimas, mylėk.

If you would be loved, love.

Sapiens se contentus est

Ita sapiens se contentus est, non ut velit esse sine amico, sed ut possit.

Išminčius pasitenkina pats savimi ne todėl, kad nenorėtų turėti draugo, bet todėl, kad galėtų neturėti jo.

In this sense the wise man is self-sufficient, that he can do without friends, not that he desires to do without them.

Bene hominem culmo quam auro tegi

Scitote tam bene hominem culmo quam auro tegi.

Žinokite, kad po šiaudiniu stogu žmogui nė kiek ne blogiau negu po auksiniu.

Understand that a man is sheltered just as well by a thatch as by a roof of gold.

Si tibi didicisti

‘Cui ergo ista didici?’ Non est quod timeas ne operam perdideris, si tibi didicisti.

“Tai kam aš tiek mokiausi?” Nebijok, tavo vargas ne veltui: išmokai sau.

You may say: “For what purpose did I learn all these things?” But you need not fear that you have wasted your efforts; it was for yourself that you learned them.

Breve iter per exempla

Longum iter est per praecepta, breve et efficax per exempla.

Kelias per pamokymus yra ilgas, o per pavyzdžius — trumpas ir veiksmingas.

The way is long if one follows precepts, but short and helpful, if one follows patterns.

Fictilis et argenti

Magnus ille est qui fictilibus sic utitur quemadmodum argento, nec ille minor est qui sic argento utitur quemadmodum fictilibus; infirmi animi est pati non posse divitias.

Didis yra tas, kuris naudojasi moliniais indais tarsi sidabriniais. Ne mažesnis ir tas, kuris sidabriniais indais naudojasi tarsi moliniais. Silpnos dvasios tas, kuris nesugeba pakęsti turto.

He is a great man who uses earthenware dishes as if they were silver; but he is equally great who uses silver as if it were earthenware. It is the sign of an unstable mind not to be able to endure riches.
