Nemo gloriari nisi suo debet

Nemo gloriari nisi suo debet. <...> Lauda in illo quod nec eripi potest nec dari, quod proprium hominis est. Quaeris quid sit? Animus et ratio in animo perfecta.

Niekas neturi didžiuotis tuo, kas jam nepriklauso. <...> Girk tai, ko negalima nei atimti, nei duoti, kas yra jo paties. Tu paklausi: kas tai? Siela ir joje tobulas protas.

No man ought to glory except in that which is his own. <...> Praise the quality in him which cannot be given or snatched away, that which is the peculiar property of the man. Do you ask what this is? It is soul, and reason brought to perfection in the soul.

Aliud autem est meminisse, aliud scire

Aliud autem est meminisse, aliud scire. Meminisse est rem commissam memoriae custodire; at contra scire est et sua facere quaeque nec ad exemplar pendere et totiens respicere ad magistrum.

Bet viena yra atsiminti, kita — žinoti. Atsiminti — tai saugoti atminty tai, ką tau kiti pavedė, o žinoti — priešingai,— daryti savaip nepriklausomai nuo pavyzdžio ir nesižvalgant kiekvieną kartą į mokytoją.

But it is one thing to remember, another to know. Remembering is merely safeguarding something entrusted to the memory; knowing, however, means making everything your own; it means not depending upon the copy and not all the time glancing back at the master.

Dicat ista, non teneat

Certi profectus viro captare flosculos turpe est et fulcire se notissimis ac paucissimis vocibus et memoria stare: sibi iam innitatur. Dicat ista, non teneat.

O šiek tiek išsilavinusiam vyrui gėda skainioti posakių žiedelius, ramstytis keletu atmintinai iškaltų pačių žinomiausių pasakymų. Tegu geriau pasikliauja savimi, pats kalba, o ne svetima įsidėmi.

For a man, however, whose progress is definite, to chase after choice extracts and to prop his weakness by the best known and the briefest sayings and to depend upon his memory, is disgraceful; it is time for him to lean on himself. He should make such maxims and not memorise them.

Nulli enim nisi audituro dicendum est

Nulli enim nisi audituro dicendum est. <...> Sagittarius non aliquando ferire debet, sed aliquando deerrare; non est ars quae ad effectum casu venit. Sapientia ars est: certum petat, eligat profecturos, ab iis quos desperavit recedat.

Kalbėti galima tik tam, kuris klauso. <...> Šaulys privalo ne retkarčiais pataikyti, bet retkarčiais prašauti pro šalį. Ne menas tai, kas tikslą pasiekia atsitiktinai. O išmintis yra menas: tegu ji pataiko taikliai, tegu pasirenka tokius, kurie ką nors sugeba, ir atsiskiria nuo tų, kuriais nusivylė.

One must not talk to a man unless he is willing to listen. <...> The archer ought not to hit the mark only sometimes; he ought to miss it only sometimes. That which takes effect by chance is not an art. Now wisdom is an art; it should have a definite aim, choosing only those who will make progress, but withdrawing from those whom it has come to regard as hopeless.

Repraesentat opes sapientia

Repraesentat opes sapientia, quas cuicumque fecit supervacuas dedit.

Išmintis duoda turtų ir juos tuoj pat padaro nereikalingus.

Wisdom offers wealth in ready money, and pays it over to those in whose eyes she has made wealth superfluous.

Sapiens se contentus est

Ita sapiens se contentus est, non ut velit esse sine amico, sed ut possit.

Išminčius pasitenkina pats savimi ne todėl, kad nenorėtų turėti draugo, bet todėl, kad galėtų neturėti jo.

In this sense the wise man is self-sufficient, that he can do without friends, not that he desires to do without them.
