Aliud autem est meminisse, aliud scire

Aliud autem est meminisse, aliud scire. Meminisse est rem commissam memoriae custodire; at contra scire est et sua facere quaeque nec ad exemplar pendere et totiens respicere ad magistrum.

Bet viena yra atsiminti, kita — žinoti. Atsiminti — tai saugoti atminty tai, ką tau kiti pavedė, o žinoti — priešingai,— daryti savaip nepriklausomai nuo pavyzdžio ir nesižvalgant kiekvieną kartą į mokytoją.

But it is one thing to remember, another to know. Remembering is merely safeguarding something entrusted to the memory; knowing, however, means making everything your own; it means not depending upon the copy and not all the time glancing back at the master.

Nulli enim nisi audituro dicendum est

Nulli enim nisi audituro dicendum est. <...> Sagittarius non aliquando ferire debet, sed aliquando deerrare; non est ars quae ad effectum casu venit. Sapientia ars est: certum petat, eligat profecturos, ab iis quos desperavit recedat.

Kalbėti galima tik tam, kuris klauso. <...> Šaulys privalo ne retkarčiais pataikyti, bet retkarčiais prašauti pro šalį. Ne menas tai, kas tikslą pasiekia atsitiktinai. O išmintis yra menas: tegu ji pataiko taikliai, tegu pasirenka tokius, kurie ką nors sugeba, ir atsiskiria nuo tų, kuriais nusivylė.

One must not talk to a man unless he is willing to listen. <...> The archer ought not to hit the mark only sometimes; he ought to miss it only sometimes. That which takes effect by chance is not an art. Now wisdom is an art; it should have a definite aim, choosing only those who will make progress, but withdrawing from those whom it has come to regard as hopeless.

Venter praecepta non audit: poscit, appellat.

Pilvas pamokymų neklauso; jis reikalauja ir prašo.

The belly will not listen to advice; it makes demands, it importunes.

Si tibi didicisti

‘Cui ergo ista didici?’ Non est quod timeas ne operam perdideris, si tibi didicisti.

“Tai kam aš tiek mokiausi?” Nebijok, tavo vargas ne veltui: išmokai sau.

You may say: “For what purpose did I learn all these things?” But you need not fear that you have wasted your efforts; it was for yourself that you learned them.
